Day 5 of the Dig

During the 1880’s when the River Wear Commissioners were clearing the river at Hylton of the large blocks of stones, one proved too much for the Dredger Hercules.

On Day 5 Dan Murphy, one of our volunteers, unearthed a really special stone which shows scrape marks. The archaeologists attribute the marks to the work of the dredgers.  It would be nice to think that this was the stone that got the better of The Hercules!
